Georgia is recognized as the world’s birthplace for domesticated wine, with a consistent historical record dating to 6,000BC. Wines continue to be made according to ancient methods by nearly every family, yet they are largely unknown, and have never been fully documented; only miniscule quantities from a handful of families are currently bottled. After 70 years of Soviet occupation, and a 7-year Russian embargo (2006-2013), 2015 promises to be a breakout year for Georgian wines, as winemakers have been forced to explore new markets, re-examine legendary terroirs, and identify their wines as vital in the global narrative of ‘natural’ wine. This film will document a voyage across the country to discover the finest wines from rural villagers and to tell their story, one of tradition’s survival in the face of adversity.
A new generation’s commitment to follow tradition is critical to that survival. We trust this film will introduce the rich Georgian wine culture to the world at large, and also give the new generation of Georgian artisans a fuller understanding of the global relevance of their efforts, providing them with further incentive to continue.
In the course of 15 years as an American sommelier, Jeremy Quinn has visited vineyards around the world with great frequency, and has been awarded many honors, including US Sommelier of the Year (Food & Wine). Jeremy’s work as a sommelier and wine consultant in the Georgian capital of Tbilisi has given him a unique intimacy with Georgia’s finest winegrowers, regions, and terroirs, and has placed him in a position to share this fascinating and timely story.
